Almira Stanke, age 90, a former hospital volunteer, avid quilter and cross stitch artist died peacefully on January 14, 2009, of natural causes. She spent her final years at the Living Tree Estates in Greenville, WI.

Almira was born and raised in Greenwood, WI, where her parents were dairy farmers. In September 1941, she and Ed Stanke eloped to Pine City, MN. Almira traveled to California where Ed was stationed in the Army. She worked on the base while waiting for his return from overseas. After migrating back to the Midwest, they raised two children in Wausau and Neenah, WI. Ed's work took them to Butler, AL, Prairie du Sac, and finally Rice Lake, WI. Almira worked as a volunteer patient escort at the hospital in Rice Lake, and donated hand made crafts. She often attended church with friends in the area.

Survivors include two children, Judy of Appleton and Dennis (Marianne) of La Crosse; six grandchildren: Kara, Jamie, Samuel, Theodore, Candice, and Amanda; six great-grandchildren; brother, Herbert (Lila) of Greenwood; and sister-in-law, Betty of Greenwood. She is preceded in death by her parents: Gustave and Anna; and a brother, Norman.

The family would like to extend a heart felt thank you to those who befriended and attended to Almira during her stay at Living Tree Estates. We consider all of you extended family.

The memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St., Appleton. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A private burial service will be held in Greenwood during this spring.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Almira's name is being established.
