Age 98, died at St. Paul Elder Services, Kaukauna, on Monday, October 2, 2006. She was born on March 28, 1908 in the Town of Royalton, daughter of the late John and Barbara (Heckel) Backes. She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Marshfield in 1929. Alice was a registered nurse doing private duty and caring for patients in the Neenah area until her marriage. She married Joseph L. Stier on February 16, 1935. They lived in Neenah where Joseph operated the Stier Tea Company Grocery Store on Commercial Street. Joseph preceded her in death in 1968. She was a wonderful homemaker known for her baking, especially her angel food cakes, homemade bread and rolls. She also made afghans, and sewed pajamas for her new grandbabies. She was also known for her colorful comforters. Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. After she raised her family, she returned to nursing at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton where she cared for babies in the newborn nursery. Alice was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Appleton. She was dedicated to praying the rosary and for many years belonged to the Blue Army Prayer Group.
Alice is survived by her children: Catherine (Gerald B.) Nytes, Carol Maher, Barbara Krupka, Joan (James) Gillitzer, and Peter (fiancé, Sue) Stier; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren with one expected; sister, Naomi (Warren) Whitlinger; brother, Jerome (Roseanne) Backes; step-sister, Kathryn Downie; daughters-in-law: Tilly, Ruth and Cathy Stier; and sister-in-law, Agnes Backes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents; sons: Joseph T. and Thomas J. Stier; sisters: Marie (Rollin) Gerold, Frances (Robert) Piel and Mary Bernice (Orville) Reffke; brothers: Paul (Marie) Backes, Eldon Backes and Roger (Luella) Backes; step-sons; Kenneth, Robert and Richard Stier; step-mother, Ann Behnke; and a son-in-law, Dennis Krupka.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, 222 E. Fremont St., Appleton, with Fr. Robert Karuhn officiating. Friends will be received at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The burial will be at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery, Weyauwega.
The family extends a heartfelt thanks to St. Paul Elder Services for their kind and compassionate care.
To all who visited Alice, wrote a note, or stopped to say “Hi,” we love you all.
Mamma, thanks for being the best Mother. Your Stier kids.
