Age 89 of Menasha formerly of Darboy, died peacefully early Thursday evening at Vallhaven Nursing Home in Neenah, shortly after being transferred from Theda Clark Medical Center. Swede was born April 8, 1916 in Ashwaubenon and lived in Little Chute for many years. He enjoyed entertaining with his brother Ed and Andy. He also was a part of “Chops Trio” and played guitar and sang throughout the valley. His proudest memories were of his Navy service in World War II. After training at Great Lakes, he served fifteen months aboard the air craft carrier USS Essex. He then transferred to the new Battleship USS Missouri. The crew earned 8 battle stars. He was aboard the ship in Tokyo Bay when the surrender papers were signed on September 2, 1945. He has shown his I.D. card with the red rising sun and McArthur, Halsey and Nimitz’s signatures to anyone and everyone.

Swede was a brick layer for over forty years and enjoyed pointing out the many buildings he worked on. After retirement he was a Security Guard for fifteen years. He also was a member of the Darboy American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Dolores (Dolly) and children Stan (Cindy), Jerry (Mandy), Jim (Lisa), Greg (Sadie), Paula (George) Holm; stepchildren, Chuck (Mary) Meyers, Nancy Meyers, Ken Meyers and special friend Kris and Terry (Diane) Meyers; grandchildren, Taylor, Andy, Natalie, Calvin, Olivia, Victoria, George Jr., Jackson, Justin, Amy, Roberta (Mike), Jamie (Katie), Jeremy, Jennifer, Travis (Heika), Staci (Erik), Jackie, Brittany; step grandchildren Maggie, Rachel, Jason, Heather, Sam, and Bobby, eleven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his first family, Karen, Vonnie, Jackie, Kathy, Keith, Cary, their spouses and 17 grandchildren, also one sister Louise (Emmet) Frank, a sister in law Ceil (Andy) Anderson, and a brother in law Ken Wink. Swede was preceded in death by a young son David his parents, Elizabeth and Albert Anderson; his brothers Edward (Vi), George (Vi), and Andy; sisters Jennette (George) Schmit, Marge Wink and Fran (Harry) Treptow.

Funeral services will be held on Monday February 13, 2006, 11 A.M. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Appleton with Pastor Gary Nokleberg officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home and at the church on Monday from 10 A.M. until the time of services. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Memorials will be donated to the USS Missouri Association and the USS Missouri Memorial Association.
